Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees 30–50 m tall.

Stems: Bark pale gray, rough, hard, furrowed throughout.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Adult Alternate. Blades lanceolate, 9.5–15 cm long, 1.2–2.4 cm wide. Apex acuminate. Blades discolorous. Margins entire. Petioles 13–22 mm long. Stipules vestigial or absent.

Flowers: Flowers 7 in umbels arranged in terminal, paniculate inflorescences, sometimes axillary and simple, peduncles 6–16 mm long, pedicels quadrangular, 2–10 mm long. buds obovoid to fusiform, 7–9 mm long, 3–5 mm wide. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Calyx modified into an operculum; operculum conical, narrower than hypanthium. Stamens numerous, in several whorls; anthers dithecal. Ovary inferior; ovule placentation axile.

Fruit: Fruit hemispherical; obconical; obovoid; or subpyriform; 6–8 mm long; 5–8 mm wide; valves 4–5; level or included. Seeds numerous.

Ploidy: 2n = 22

Habitat: Planted; often as windbreaks; on Kaua'i; O'ahu; Moloka'i; Maui; and Hawai'i; and regenerating from seed within the plantations.
